HELLO

JUMPSTART YOUR JAM is a detailed look at the Corktown Ukulele Jam model for organizers of uke gatherings, clubs, groups, jams, workshops and events.

Presented by Steve McNie in Toronto, June 24-26.

JYJ was inspired by the countless "how do you..." questions we get from those who organize ukulele event organizers.

Having done it so many times for so long, we've learned a ton about how to successfully build community, inspire fun and mine creative potential from a very diverse participatory audience.

Diversity is our greatest asset and biggest challenge:

How do you find common ground that is equally engaging to those who can play and those who are new?

What do you do to make it fun?

How do you maintain interest amongst those who like songs from Tin Pan Alley when the song at hand is reggae?

How do you strike a balance between order and enjoyment in a room filled to capacity with people with ukuleles?

What have we learned about presenting and growing our songbook?

How do you disseminate information between events? Promote?

Is there a role for social media?

Traditions and rituals: how do they work and how do they get started?

Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or every once in a while?

These are the kinds of questions we get, and are the pillars in this in depth exploration of why CUJam continues to flourish and grow.

JYJ is a 3-day forum in Toronto, packed with information and ideas for leaders, facilitators and organizers.

It begins on Tuesday morning and wraps up on Thursday afternoon.

In the middle, we attend a regular night at the Corktown Ukulele Jam and trust that by the time we are finished, you will have have been inspired by new ideas seeded by our presentation and from this opportunity for peer discussion.

We are very aware that a mid-week event like this causes complications for people whose livelihoods depend on a regular work week. We felt it was important to include a Corktown Ukulele Jam on the agenda and trust that what you will take away from this experience will be a worthwhile allocation of a few vacation days.

Facilitating and presenting this JYJ offering is Corktown Ukulele Jam producer and co-founder, Steve McNie.
